Frames from the crypt... it's Alive!
There comes a slightly terrifying moment with every creative project when you have to stop tinkering with it, stop moving things around by three pixels, stop saying “I’ll just fix one more thing” and actually let people see it.
Well… that moment has arrived.
Frames from the Crypt is officially live.
Frames from the Crypt is the first series to emerge from the strange little world we’ve been building here at ZedBear Media. Hosted by BearBera Steele, it explores the strange, curious and often forgotten corners of animation history, uncovering eerie films, unusual characters, early visual tricks and the fascinating stories behind animation’s spookier side.
Think animation history with the lights turned down.
The idea has been developing for a while, but bringing the first episode to life has involved a wonderful mixture of research, writing, illustration, AI-assisted animation, voice work, music, editing and quite a lot of experimentation.
There have also been a few unexpected detours.
BearBera has, at various stages of production, acquired enormous paws, mysterious glasses and some very questionable facial expressions courtesy of enthusiastic AI models. One skeleton briefly developed a bright pink human tongue. None of these artistic choices survived the final edit.
Probably for the best!
But underneath all the technical experimenting, Frames from the Crypt has always been about something much simpler: curiosity.
Animation history is enormous, wonderfully messy and full of fascinating side roads. Some lead to famous studios and familiar characters. Others lead to forgotten shorts, strange inventions, theatrical illusions and artists whose work helped shape the medium long before audiences even had a word for animation.
Those are the corridors I want Frames from the Crypt to explore.
The first episode travels all the way back to the world of magic lanterns and phantasmagoria, when audiences gathered in darkened rooms to watch projected ghosts, skeletons and apparitions seemingly appear before them.
Long before cinema screens, visual effects or digital animation, people were already experimenting with light, movement and illusion to make impossible things appear alive.
Which feels like a rather appropriate place for this series to begin.
This first episode is also something of a prototype for what Frames from the Crypt can become. There are plenty more forgotten films, strange characters, animation pioneers and restless reels waiting deeper inside the vault.
And Frames from the Crypt itself is only one room in a much larger world currently being developed at ZedBear Media.
For now, though, I’m incredibly happy to have reached this particular milestone.
The vault is open.
